Tabata is a fitness protocol that is really starting to pick up interest. Why you might ask? Because it is an amazingly efficient way to burn fat and calories and rev up your metabolism, in a very short period of time. As it turns out tabata can burn 13.5 calories a minute AND double a person's metabolic rate for 30 minutes afterward! And one of the greatest benefits of anaerobic training is that your body keeps burning fat for 24 hours after your workout. According to Dr. Michele Olsen it would take five times the amount of cardio exercises to shed the same amount of calories that result from a 4 minute tabata workout.
The original protocol consists of 20/10 intervals in seconds. Within those 20 seconds you are going to go ALL OUT, GIVING IT EVERYTHING YOU HAVE with one move and then rest for 10 seconds and then watch how your cardiovascular system gets activated! The original version of tabata is for only 4 minutes. However myself and others have extended this to longer sessions. I actually stick to 12 minutes, I am normally focused on working more than one group of muscles at a time, but some days it's about one targeted muscle group. So I do 6 rounds of one exercise x 4 exercises, as one example. And that is it, done for the day. Think of all the extra time you would have if you didn't have to go to the gym!
I have personally been doing this form of exercise for 9 years with great success. But always changing things up so there is a constant challenge. Along with my plant based style of eating I have been able to maintain my ideal weight which for me at 5'2" is between 110-115 lbs. Is this the right choice for you? Do you have 12 minutes a day to work your body, I sure do hope so. Try tabata and find out.
Just remember this like any other fitness program should be checked out with your doctor. This is not for the faint of heart. Just realize that there is always a modification for something if you are using training videos. If you can't do something just change it to something else, preferably something within the same muscle group. Here is a list of good exercises for the beginner:
By the way tabata training was discovered by a Japanese scientist named Dr. Izumi Tabata and a team of researchers from the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo. He did a experiment with two test groups and the tabata group improved both its aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels. The anaerobic fitness level increased 28%. He actually worked with ice skaters who were training for the Olympics. So it is scientifically proven.
